Take a look below to learn how we downsized from our land home to our water home.
Explore hacks for tiny home living and read about our adventures. Almost every inch of our boat is used for something practical.
We live, work, and play all in one spot.
The fire pit crackled into the crisp night air, the smell of oak mingling with the sharp, sweet aroma of bourbon. Brad ("Shump"ert) leaned back in his chair, cradling his glass in his hand, letting the amber liquid swirl. Across the fire, his friend, Brad G. laughed at some half-formed joke, his cheeks flushed from the warmth of the flames and the bourbon alike.
“This,” Brad G said, gesturing around with a half-empty bottle, “this is what life’s about, Shump. Good bourbon, good company, a fire, and a billion stars above us."
Shump chuckled, tipping his head back. “It is nice, but you’re forgetting the looming mortgage, the neighbors who insist on early morning leaf-blowing, and the nine-to-five grind.” He sighed. “Wouldn’t it be great to just… sail away from it all?”
Brad G. raised an eyebrow. “Sail away, huh? You even know how to sail? Shump shrugged. “Not yet. But I could learn.”
“Bourbon’s getting to your head, buddy.”
“Maybe,” Shump said, but the idea clung to him. “Think about it, Brad. A boat. Floating on the water, no yard to mow, no traffic, just freedom. You can drop anchor wherever you want. Wake up to sunrises over the river, no rush-hour chaos.”
Brad laughed, then poured another splash into Shump's glass.
“You’re serious, aren’t you? Well, you're in luck. I'm selling my boat. Want to buy it?”
By the time the bottle was empty, the decision was made.
The next morning, Both Brads woke up with a pounding headache but the decision hadn't faded. They pulled out a used envelope from the mail pile and inked a contract on the spot. The dream still lingered, undiminished by sobriety.
In April 2022, we moved out of our house and began learning the basics of yachting on Changing Latitudes under Brad G's coaching. Our backyard became the Tennessee River and the adventures began.
We still work. We still raise kids. But we found the "loophole" in the rat race.
We discovered a few new nonnegotiables after Covid. We realized that life is too short to wait to have fun. Why not integrate the fun along the way? Changing Latitudes has become a conversation starter for so many new relationships and has reminded us of our deeper connections to our environment and the people around us.
We invite you to raise a glass—bourbon, of course—to the firelit night that changed everything.
This is #LoopholeLiving: Life Outside the Ordinary.
-Brad & Kim Shumpert
Like the name implies, #LoopholeLiving is a state of mind, a means of escape amidst the chaos. It’s a place to remind you of your resilience and renew your spirit. We always loved boating but on a much smaller scale. Covid was a strong reminder to us that each day is a gift. We wanted to use each of those days to the fullest.
Changing Latitudes
presented the opportunity to disrupt the mundane and bring a little adventure to our days. Although it meant downsizing, it also meant prioritizing. We wouldn't change a thing! Check out the blogs below to explore what tiny living looks like.
